In the final scene, as Jesse and Céline part at the train station, they whisper promises about “meeting in six months.” Many subtitle tracks render these whispers in standard capital letters. A few sensitive tracks (the Criterion again) use lowercase, italicized, gray text to mimic a whisper. The difference is profound. It makes the audience lean in, just as the characters do. Sometimes.
